The Effects of Interpersonal Support on Treatment Outcomes Using Cognitive Processing Therapy

Overview

This study investigates the relationship between interpersonal support and treatment outcomes in Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). It specifically examines how social support influences PTSD symptom improvement in active duty military personnel and compares outcomes between group and individual CPT modalities. The findings provide insight into the role of social support in enhancing PTSD treatment effectiveness.

Methodology

The study utilized a randomized controlled trial design:

  • Participants included 322 active duty service members undergoing PTSD treatment.
  • Participants were assigned to either group or individual CPT.
  • PTSD symptoms and dimensions of social support were measured at baseline and post-treatment.
  • Cross-lagged regression models were used to examine the relationships between pre- and post-treatment PTSD severity and social support.

Findings

The study identified several key outcomes:

  • Lower pre-treatment PTSD severity was associated with higher levels of post-treatment social support across all three measured subscales.
  • Group CPT showed a stronger relationship between pre- and post-treatment PTSD severity compared to individual CPT.
  • The findings suggest that social support plays a critical role in PTSD treatment outcomes, regardless of the modality.

Implications

The study highlights the importance of integrating social support into PTSD treatment. Recommendations include:

  • Developing family-centered models to enhance interpersonal support during treatment.
  • Incorporating social skills training to improve the quality and availability of support networks.
  • Tailoring treatment approaches to leverage group dynamics effectively while addressing unique needs in individual therapy.

These findings emphasize the need for providers to consider social support as a key factor in improving treatment outcomes for military personnel with PTSD.
